Hunger is a reality for millions of people in the United States, despite being one of the wealthiest countries in the world. From coast to coast, families struggle to put food on the table, and it’s a crisis that is often ignored by the media. In this article, we’ll take a closer look at the issue of hunger in America, exploring why it’s happening, who it affects, and what organizations are doing to help.

Why is hunger in America on the rise?

There are several reasons why hunger is a growing problem in the United States. The first is the high cost of living, which has made it difficult for many low-income families to make ends meet. Another factor is the ongoing economic downturn, which has resulted in job losses and reduced income for many households. Additionally, the COVID-19 pandemic has made things even worse, as millions of people have lost their jobs and struggled to make ends meet.

Who does hunger affect in America?

Hunger affects people of all ages, races, and ethnicities. However, it disproportionately affects children, seniors, and low-income families. In cities such as Detroit, Michigan, and Baltimore, Maryland, for example, hunger is a widespread problem, and organizations like Gleaners Community Food Bank of Southeastern Michigan and Maryland Food Bank are working to provide food and support to those in need.

Why is hunger in America not more talked about?

One reason why hunger in America is not more talked about is because it’s often seen as a personal issue, rather than a systemic one. Many people believe that those who are hungry are responsible for their own situation, rather than acknowledging the larger social, economic, and political factors that contribute to hunger. Additionally, hunger is often hidden, as many people are ashamed to admit they can’t afford to put food on the table.
